Lorna Anderson leads pretty average life, that is as average as it can get in 1945, helping out on her father’s farm with endless chores and rationing, and praying for and allied victory. However when Paul Vogel, a German prisoner of war, is assigned as a new farm hand on her father’s farm, Lorna feels betrayed. How could her father allow her to work along side the enemy when her own brothers were risking their lives to save the country? But as Lorna starts to get to know the boy behind the scars, she learns that Paul isn’t all that bad. With the war close to end, Lorna must determine how much she is willing to sacrifice for her love, before the end of the war pulls them back to their own normal lives. I loved this debut novel from YA author Caroline Leech, in which was much more than your average Holocaust novel. I loved how it gave a different perspective on World War Two, that wasn’t just about victims of war, but also the love that war drove apart. This novel took a whole new angle on “don’t judge a book by its cover” even an enemy, in this case. I would highly recommend it for historical fiction lovers, and ages 12 and up.
