Mary B. Addison was convicted of manslaughter for killing a baby. For the media the only thing that mattered was that a healthy white baby had died while in the care of a black woman and her 9 year old daughter, Mary. Mary took the blame, always not saying much, or tying to defend herself. It never seemed to matter much before, but when Mary becomes pregnant and the state wants to take her child, she needs to set the record straight. The only person who can do that? Her Momma. In this this thrilling novel you begin to discover about who the real Mary is, as well as what really happened the night infant Alysssa died. This mystery has so much depth, not only in the history that has happened, but as well as the battles Mary has to fight in the present. I loved the amazing character development of Mary, as well as the other girls living in the group home, who all had so much more going on the inside than on the outside. I would recommend it for ages 13 and up, and give it a high rating.
